How is mental retardation diagnosed?

Doctors diagnose mental retardation using a combination of formal testing and observation. During routine medical visits, doctors use simple questionnaires to gauge your child's developmental progress. If your child performs much lower on these questionnaires than other children their age, your doctor may refer him or her for formal testing. Formal testing includes interviews with parents, observation and norm-based tests. Often a team of medical professionals will evaluate a child for mental retardation. Should the child be diagnosed, this team will also be involved in planning therapies and treatments.
