Why are follow-up tests important after aneurysm coiling?

Dr. Geoffrey P. Colby, MD
In some cases the aneurysm can't be filled with coils completely at the first operation. And in some cases, over time, the coils get compacted. They get pushed up into the aneurysm, and part of the aneurysm regrows.

For that reason it's important to perform follow-up diagnostic testing on patients who've had endovascular coil treatment of aneurysms. Testing will show if the coils are holding, that there is no change in the coil position, and that the aneurysm is not regrowing or beginning to refill with blood. In those cases, it's necessary to go back and put more coils in place.
