Why would someone need limb lengthening surgery?

There are many instances where someone may need limb lengthening surgery. Limb lengthening is often viewed as a cosmetic (elective) surgery, but cases where it is needed include people who have one leg that is abnormally short as compared to the other leg. Causes of one abnormally short limb may include:

  • poliomyelitis
  • septic arthritis
  • osteomyelitis
  • hip diseases such as Legg-Calve-Perthes disease
  • juvenile arthritis
  • neurofibromatosis
  • previous injuries or bone fractures
  • birth defects of bones/joints/muscles/tendons/ligaments
  • tumors or blood vessel disorders that affect the bone’s growth plates
