When does physical therapy start after joint replacement surgery?

If a person has joint replacement surgery in the morning, the goal is to start physical therapy that afternoon, or if not, then the next morning. The person will work with the physical therapy team to improve range of motion. For example, people who undergo knee replacement surgery will practice going up and down stairs. For people who have had hip or spine surgery, getting out of bed without the use of hospital equipment is the goal. So they practice this motion on the mats during physical therapy.
