What level of function do prostheses and braces allow people to have?

Whether someone has had limb salvage surgery (primarily performed to remove bone and soft-tissue cancers occurring in limbs in order to avoid amputation) or an amputation, advances in braces and prosthetics are making a fully engaged life more possible.

For people who have had limb salvage surgery, newly designed braces can allow them to function at a high level, even run.

The high number of servicemen and women who have lost limbs in Iraq and Afghanistan has spurred innovation and the use of new technology in prosthetics. That innovation also benefits civilians who have had an amputation, allowing them to be much more functional than they could have been 20 years ago.
