Anytime a patient is placed on the operating room table, there is an increased risk for both deep venous throbosis and pulmonary embolus. In our surgery center, all patients have pneumatic compression boots and venous stockings to promote venous blood from the calf venous system to the pelvic and inferior vena cava. Fat emobolus are most commonly associated with longer than 5 hour surgeries, orthopedic cases, and larger body sculpting surgeries.
