Hypokalemia usually occurs in an individual with other health conditions. Any disease that affects the retention of potassium in the kidneys, such as Cushing syndrome, can cause hypokalemia. Sometimes the treatment for other health disorders, such as diuretics or certain antibiotics, causes the condition.
