How do iron chelators help people with thalassemia?

Iron chelators help people with thalassemia by taking care of excessive iron, or iron overload. Iron chelators grab the extra iron and get it out of the body. People need iron chelators if they have thalassemia intermedia or if they have blood transfusions. Iron chelators come as an infusion, a pill or tablet that is dissolved in juice or water. They stop the extra iron from building up before it can cause problems for the liver and heart.
