What are side effects of chemotherapy bladder instillation?

When chemotherapy is given as a bladder instillation, you can have pain on urination, frequency and urgency of urination, and sometimes a small amount of blood in the urine. These effects usually go away after a day or two. Chemotherapy bladder instillations do not cause side effects such as hair loss, nausea, or vomiting, sometimes seen with intravenous (IV) chemotherapy. In a small number of patients, chemotherapy given into the bladder can cause low blood counts and allergic reactions.

Call your doctor if you have any of these side effects:
  • fever, chills
  • flu-like symptoms, joint pain, cough, skin rash
  • Severe urinary side effects: pain or burning on urination, urgency, frequent urination, blood in urine
