  • The simple form of black lung disease, or coal miner's pneumoconiosis, usually exhibits no symptoms. However, people with black lung disease who suffer from other pulmonary diseases may experience coughing or shortness of breath. If the disease progresses to its more serious form, known as progressive massive fibrosis, more disabling coughing and shortness of breath can result. About 1 percent to 2 percent of all people with simple black lung disease will progress to progressive massive fibrosis.
