Black lung disease cannot be cured or specifically treated. Medications play no role in preventing or reversing the disease. However, certain medications may address the symptoms associated with progressive massive fibrosis, a more serious form of the disease. For instance, medications called broncodilators may open airways and clear out mucus, which can reduce discomfort. People who experience high blood pressure or low oxygen saturation rates in the blood may benefit from oxygen therapy.
