How is black lung disease diagnosed?

Doctors may suspect black lung disease in miners or others who have been inhaling coal dust for many years. Chest x-rays can reveal small spots on the lung, a characteristic of the simple form of black lung disease. However, x-rays are not as effective in diagnosing progressive massive fibrosis, a more serious form of the disease, because chest x-rays may also reveal spots that are caused by other diseases, such as cancer, which can coincide with the fibrosis. Doctors who suspect progressive massive fibrosis may order a chest CT scan instead to diagnose the condition.
