How should I moisturize my lips to keep the skin healthy?

Maureen Herrmann
Cosmetology
Lips are very sensitive and can dry out easily if using the wrong products. Because our lips lack sebaceous glands and have a thin layer at the top, it makes them very susceptible to becoming chapped and even sometimes cracked especially in cold climates or climates that lack moisture. I recommend using single ingredient lip balms and to avoid lip balms with frangrance and menthol which can actually cause irritation. Using a good lip balm will help protect your lips and prevent water loss. Look for products with occlusive properties such as shea butter.

Dermatology
Regularly apply a moisturizing lip treatment that contains an SPF ingredient to protect from sun damage. Select a product that has emollients to soften lips and soothe chapped skin and dryness. We recommend the emollients qualane, carnauba wax, petrolatum, and silicone in lip products.
