Is it normal to have bad breath right after brushing my teeth?

You should wait approximately 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth. Digestion of food takes time and acid from foods still attacks teeth up to 30 minutes afterward. If you are waiting 30 minutes and your breath is still not fresh right after brushing, see your dentist. There could be other problems, such as medical issues, that could be causing bad breath.

Your breath should smell fresh after brushing your teeth. If yours doesn't, there are a number of potential culprits. The first place your dentist will look for problems is, naturally, in your mouth, as certain oral health conditions can make your breath smell bad. They include:
  • cavities
  • an abscessed tooth
  • an impacted tooth, or a tooth that can't erupt through the gums
  • gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease
  • periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease
In many cases, unexplained bad breath turns out to be linked to one of these conditions. However, if your dentist is unable to locate the problem, he or she may suggest you see a doctor, as chronic bad breath can be a symptom of other medical conditions.
