It is possible for children to develop an infection under a cast. It is very important not to get the cast wet. Moisture under the cast can cause skin breakdown, which can create an environment for bacteria. Also, it is best to not put anything in the cast to scratch the skin because this can cause skin irritation and inflammation and raise the risk for infection.
