Antibiotics are the best treatment for bacterial throat infections. However, there are supplementary ways to combat the symptoms. Bed rest and hydration are a good idea. Gargling salt water or using a vaporizer can decrease pain in the throat directly. People also sometimes take over-the-counter pain relievers, like acetaminophen or Tylenol.
