When is surgery performed for back pain?

In rare cases, doctors will perform surgery to treat back pain. Surgery is usually a last resort or a treatment for some large-scale anatomical problem. There are several types of surgery that treat back pain. One involves fusing two vertebrae to prevent them from grating against each other or otherwise moving painfully. Other surgical procedures involve removing part of a disk or vertebra in order to directly eliminate the source of back pain.
