How is avian flu diagnosed?

Avian flu (bird flu) may be suspected by its symptoms, especially if you have had contact with infected birds or people and are experiencing flu symptoms. However, it can only be diagnosed by laboratory tests. One of these tests uses nasal secretions to confirm the diagnosis; another may involve a blood test. X-rays of the lungs might also be done to determine the severity of the case.
