Should I be worried about autosomal recessive genetic disorders?

You are at a higher risk of having an autosomal recessive disorder or having an affected child with an autosomal recessive disorder if you have a family history of such a disorder.  Genetic counselors can help you to determine your risk to have such a disease or to be a carrier for an autosomal recessive disease.  They can also determine first whether your partner is a carrier and from there, the risk for living or future children to have the disorder. Additionally, they can prepare you for any special needs or challenges such a disorder may pose for your family.
