What is laser treatment for epilepsy in kids with tuberous sclerosis (TSC)?

Dr. Aria Fallah, MD

With laser treatment for epilepsy in children with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), instead of doing a big incision on the head, doctors trim a little bit of the hair and insert a fiber that goes right into the spot they need to reach. Thermal energy, or heat energy, cooks this spot and destroys that tissue to stop the seizures. This has been tried for TSC and the early results show that this procedure is not as effective as traditional open brain surgery.

Depending on the area of the brain that needs to be destroyed to stop the seizures, if that area's small enough, laser can be a good option and a minimally invasive option. But generally, the successes aren't as effective as traditional open brain surgery.
