Alternative treatments for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are popular, but few have been proven to produce results. Some families have reported success with special diets that eliminate certain foods, such as gluten, dairy, or yeast. Art and music therapy are also used, as is a therapy known as sensory integration. Be careful when using alternative treatments: Chelation therapy, sometimes used to eliminate heavy metals thought to contribute to ASDs, can cause kidney failure and death.
