What are the signs of autism spectrum disorders in children?

Early signs of autism spectrum disorder include:
  • no babbling or pointing by age 1
  • no response to name
  • loss of language or social skills that the child previously had
  • poor eye contact
  • no smiling or social responsiveness
Later, a child may have:
  • difficulty making friends or trying to have a conversation.
  • impaired imagination
  • preoccupation with objects
If you feel your child has any of these signs, you should talk to your doctor about an evaluation for autism spectrum disorder.
