Eventually, your teen with autism will be living away from home and will not be under your protection. He needs to know how to speak up for himself. Start this training while he is in school. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004 mandates that students be invited to participate in transition planning. This supportive environment can be good training ground. Make sure your teen is aware of his strengths and weaknesses and how he is different from others. In this way, a teen with autism can gain a real-life understanding of areas he may need to improve upon or those in which he requires assistance from others. He can also learn the areas in which he is proficient, and can find methods of building upon his strengths.
