How can people with autism deal with sensory processing problems?

In my interviews with adults with autism about sensory processing issues, I learned that the most helpful strategy was knowing in advance where they were going, who they were going to see, and what was going to happen, so that they could anticipate and prepare themselves for the sensory aspects of their day. Other strategies included changing diet, wearing special lenses, having a sensory diet (activities done on a regular basis to keep from experiencing sensory overload), undergoing auditory and vision therapy, and desensitization techniques.
