How should I take aspirin?

Although it is a common and readily available medicine aspirin has side effects, risks, and interactions with health conditions and other drugs. If you are taking aspirin over the counter, follow the directions on the label. Follow your doctor's directions if you take aspirin under medical advice or prescription. A vinegar smell in your aspirin bottle may mean the pills no longer work and need to be discarded.  Take uncoated aspirin especially with a drink of water, or milk or with food if you want to lessen the side effect of heartburn or stomach upset. Enteric-coated aspirin should be swallowed without chewing or breakage. Remove orally disintegrating tablets from their packaging and put them in your mouth with dry hands. Chew up chewable tablets before you swallow them.
