How is a ruptured appendix treated?

If a ruptured appendix is caught early, it can sometimes be treated with laparoscopic surgery to try to get rid of the infection. If the rupture has already caused an abscess, draining the infection with the help of radiologists may be needed to allow before surgery is planned to remove the appendix. If infection has spread throughout the abdomen (peritonitis), urgent surgery will be needed.
