What is Olysio?

Olysio (simeprevir) is a medication used to treat chronic hepatitis C, a viral infection that can damage the liver and sometimes lead to liver failure or cancer. More specifically, Olysio treats a type of the virus called genotype 1. It helps fight the hepatitis C virus by blocking it from multiplying. Olysio is not used alone, but rather is combined with other drugs, such as Sovaldi (sofosbuvir). More than 90% of people who complete treatment with this combination are cured of the infection.

Olysio comes as a capsule that is taken once a day with food. How long you have to continue taking Olysio depends on whether you have cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver and whether you've been treated unsuccessfully with other drugs for hepatitis C before, but most people will take it for 12 to 24 weeks.
