Is famciclovir safe for pregnant or breast-feeding women?

Stacy Wiegman, PharmD
Pharmacy Specialist

We don’t know if famciclovir is safe for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.  The animal studies in pregnant rats and rabbits showed no defects, but animal studies are not always a good representation of what will happen in people.  Doctors are encouraged to enroll patients in the Famvir (famciclovir) Pregnancy Reporting Program to report outcomes if the use of famciclovir is necessary in pregnancy.  Women should talk with their doctors about the benefits and risks before starting famciclovir if they are pregnant or want to become pregnant. Since it's also unknown whether famciclovir passes through breast milk, women should discontinue famciclovir or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about taking famciclovir while pregnant or breastfeeding.
