Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the muscle at the bottom of your esophagus (where it connects to the stomach) does not close all the way and allows stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus. Protonix stops the stomach from producing acid, so that the amount that flows up into the esophagus is reduced, thus reducing the damage and pain associated with GERD.

Prilosec OTC (omeprazole) is an over-the-counter version of Prilosec and is a drug that reduces stomach acid. It belongs to a category of drugs called "proton pump inhibitors," which reduce the stomach's production of acid by binding to a certain enzyme in the lining of the stomach sometimes referred to as "the proton pump."

Prilosec OTC is available without a prescription for treating heartburn in adults who experience heartburn two or more days per week. It is not meant to be used to treat infrequent heartburn—and will not provide immediate relief for occasional heartburn, since it can take up to four days to work.

To relieve frequent heartburn, your doctor will probably instruct you to take Prilosec OTC once a day in the morning before you eat for 14 days. You may feel relief from heartburn as soon as the first day you take it, or it may take four days before your heartburn improves. Once you finish your two-week course of Prilosec, do not take the medicine again for four months, unless your doctor directs you to. Talk to your doctor for more information about Prilosec OTC and ways to take it safely.

It comes in 200 milligram (mg) tablets and may be taken twice a day for up to 14 days. If your symptoms persist, talk to your doctor.

Axid AR (nizatidine) is an over-the-counter medication that reduces the amount of acid released into the stomach; it's used to relieve or prevent heartburn, indigestion and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Axid AR is one of a group of medicines called H2-receptor antagonists, also known as H2 blockers.

This medicine contains the same ingredient as prescription Axid, but it is sold in tablet form and should be taken as needed rather than on a regular schedule. You should not take more than two Axid AR tablets in a 24-hour period. Tell your doctor if you find yourself taking Axid AR regularly for two weeks or more.

Lansoprazole capsules, clarithromycin tablets and amoxicillin capsules are packaged together in a 14-day kit. The combination is intended to eradicate Helicobacter pylori bacteria from the gut of people with duodenal ulcers. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic in the penicillin drug group and clarithromycin is an antibiotic in the macrolide group. Lansoprazole decreases acid production in the stomach.

Discussing your health condition with your physician is essential before starting a regimen of Prevpac (lansoprazole, clarithromycin and amoxicillin). Tell your doctor if you have any chronic illnesses or liver or kidney disease. Tell the doctor if you are allergic to amoxicillin, lansoprazole, clarithromycin or any other antibiotics, medicines, foods or preservatives.

Since there is a possibility that this medication could affect a developing fetus, also tell your doctor if you are pregnant or attempting to get pregnant. Also, inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding. Lansoprazole, clarithromycin and amoxicillin should only be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician, due to the risk of serious complications. If you experience any signs of allergic reaction (i.e. hives, swelling, itching, fainting, breathing difficulties or chest pain) get emergency medical help immediately. Severe diarrhea should also be reported to your physician.

While H2 antagonists are available over the counter, they are only meant for short term use, which is about 2 weeks.  If your symptoms of heartburn persist, you should call your doctor for an evaluation.  Also, if you have unexplained weight loss or difficulty swallowing, it’s probably more than just heartburn.
