How effective is topical vitamin D at treating psoriasis?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Vitamin D treatment is effective and safe for plaque psoriasis. Ointments are more effective than creams, but are messy and greasy. Liquid and foam types are also available. A solution of vitamin D in an alcohol or water base may be easier to use for scalp psoriasis. Vitamin D treatment does not heal the skin as quickly as topical corticosteroids, but it results in longer symptom-free periods.
