Can ifosfamide affect urinary health?

Ifosfamide (Ifex), a drug that treats testicular and other types of cancer, may cause serious urinary health problems. These include:
  • hemorrhagic cystitis (bladder inflammation with bleeding)
  • painful urination
  • urinary frequency (urgent urination)
  • bladder irritation
  • renal toxicity (poisoning of the kidneys)
To keep your kidneys working properly while you're receiving ifosfamide, you should drink or receive intravenously around ten 8-ounce glasses of fluid daily and urinate frequently. Your doctor may also prescribe a medication called mesna, which helps prevent urinary side effects. This liquid is mixed with juice and taken by mouth, or is injected into a vein.
