Yes. Mercaptopurine can cause birth defects and abortion. The prescribing doctor must know the pregnancy status of the patient before it is started. Mercaptopurine can lower blood cell counts, including white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. This makes the patient prone to infection, anemia and excessive bleeding.
