Are there any risks in taking Sutent?

Taking a prescription medication such as Sutent can be risky in some situations.
  • If you are taking Sutent while pregnant, you are at great risk of harm to your unborn child. You should use birth control while taking Sutent so that you don't become pregnant while taking the medication.
  • If you're breastfeeding and taking Sutent, some of the medication may pass into your breast milk, though it is not yet known if this occurs.
  • If you have heart problems, high blood pressure, a thyroid disorder or have had other conditions, such as a stroke and bypass graft surgery, you could be at risk for complications while taking Sutent. Your doctor may still prescribe the medication, but you may need a different dose.
  • You are at risk of complications if you take too much or improper doses of Sutent. Sutent can pose risks if you take it with certain medications that interact negatively with it. To avoid these risks, tell your doctor about the drugs you are taking.
  • Eating grapefruit may increase the levels of Sutent in your blood, so your doctor may tell you to avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
  • Sutent has been linked to certain serious side effects, such as kidney damage and severe skin reactions.
  • Sutent can cause low blood sugar, which can lead to loss of consciousness or require hospitalization. You should aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar, and tell your doctor if you develop them while taking Sutent.
