Are there any risks in taking methotrexate?

Methotrexate can cause serious life-threatening side effects, and should only be used if no other medications are working for life-threatening or severe medical conditions. Methotrexate can cause liver, kidney, and lung damage. It can damage the lining of your mouth and intestines, increase the risk of lymphoma, cause serious skin problems, and also damage your immune system and leave you susceptible to infections. If you take this drug while undergoing radiation, it can increase the risk of damage to your bones, skin and other parts of your body. Methotrexate can decrease the amount of blood cells in your bone marrow. This medication can cause birth defects. Pregnant and nursing women should not take this medication.
