What should I know about vinblastine before receiving it?

You should not use vinblastine if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Vinblastine is known to harm fetuses in pregnant women who take vinblastine, so you should not receive this medication if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while on vinblastine, tell your doctor. Vinblastine may also lower your body's ability to fight infections. If you already have a low white blood cell count or a bacterial infection, you should talk to your doctor before starting vinblastine. Avoid people who have a cold, the flu or any kind of contagious disease, and do not receive a live vaccine or be around people who have recently had live vaccines, as you are more susceptible to infection. If you have liver or coronary artery disease, wasting syndrome, skin ulcers, bed sores, a history of blood clots, stroke or bone marrow cancer, your doctor may need to adjust your treatment of vinblastine. It may interact with conivaptan, diclofenac, imatinib, isoniazid, phenytoin, certain antibiotics, antifungals, antidepressants, heart or blood pressure medications, cancer medications and HIV/AIDS medications. Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and herbal supplements to avoid the possibility of an interaction.
