What should I know about topotecan before taking it?

You should know that the topotecan treatment involves a daily for five days in a row. Every 21 days you will repeat this procedure for a minimum of four times. Results may not be evident for a few weeks to a month. Capsules are taken daily using the same schedule. Take a topotecan capsule with a full glass of water. Be careful not to get it in your eyes or on your skin. Wash area thoroughly with soap and water if you do get it on your skin and flush eyes for at least 15 minutes. Never crush, chew or use a broken capsule. Store topotecan capsules in the refrigerator and keep away from light. If you miss a dose of topotecan, ask your doctor what you should do. If you overdose on topotecan, get to the hospital immediately. Signs of an overdose include fever, chills, body aches, flu-like symptoms, sores or white patches in your mouth or other signs of infection. An overdose of topotecan can cause bone marrow depression. Avoid people who are sick as your susceptibility to infection is high while taking topotecan. Tell your doctor if you have had any vaccines lately. Avoid getting a live vaccine while using topotecan. Let your doctor know if you are using any medications, including vitamins, minerals, herbal products and over-the-counter medications as well. Cyclosporine interacts with topotecan and should not be used while on this regimen.
