What side effects does sumatriptan (Imitrex) cause?

Sumatriptan can have a range of side effects. Discontinue use and call 911 immediately if you experience allergic reactions, such as hives, a rash that may itch along with swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue, difficulty breathing or wheezing; or any of these severe side effects: chest pain or a tightened throat. Call your doctor and get immediate medical care if you experience elevated or erratic heartbeat; confusion, hallucinations or fainting; seizures; vision or hearing changes; severe vomiting or bloody diarrhea; numbness or tingling; or changes in blood pressure.

Some side effects of sumatriptan do not require medical attention unless they get worse or last for an extended period of time. Mild side effects include: facial burning, redness or flushing;  weakness or drowsiness; mild nausea, diarrhea or vomiting; aching muscles or cramps; slight tingling of the skin; mild dizziness. Sumatriptan may cause other side effects. Tell your doctor about any side effects you experience that are not on this list.
