What is naratriptan?

Naratriptan, also available under the brand name Amerge, is a prescription medication that treats migraine headaches by reducing pain. The medication, which comes in tablet form, also diminishes symptoms associated with migraines, including sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting. Naratriptan should be taken after a migraine has begun.

Take naratriptan only to relieve migraine headaches and never to treat other types of pain. People with blood vessel or heart disease are at greater risk of side effects associated with naratriptan.

One tablet of naratriptan should relieve a migraine headache. If the migraine persists, wait at least four hours before taking a second tablet. Even if your headache persists, do not take more than two tablets in a 24-hour period.
