What should I avoid while taking sumatriptan?

Treatment with sumatriptan can increase your risk of developing a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome. To decrease your risk, avoid taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin/norepinephrine inhibitors (SNRIs) medications during treatment with sumatriptan. Also avoid taking other migraine medications for up to two weeks before or after sumatriptan treatment. It is important to avoid taking too much sumatriptan, even if it does not seem to be working on your headaches. Immediately get medical help if you experience signs of an overdose, such as chest pain, dilated pupils, loss of coordination, tremors, difficulty breathing or seizures.

Sumatriptan may cause you to become drowsy, dizzy or nauseous, and your face may become red or flushed. Do not drink alcohol during sumatriptan treatment, as it adds to these side effects. Similarly, sumatriptan can increase your risk of serious heart problems such as irregular heartbeat or heart attack. Do not smoke cigarettes during treatment, as that greatly increases your risk of heart problems. Because you may become drowsy or dizzy while taking sumatriptan, do not perform activities that require much coordination or alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you know how the medication can affect you.
