What should I know about an Imitrex injection before using it?

You should know that Imitrex injection is intended for treatment of a migraine or cluster headache attack and not to prevent the headaches. Imitrex works to narrow blood vessels in the brain which are thought to contribute to the pain. There are certain health risks associated with Imitrex use. Before using an Imitrex, be sure that your doctor knows about all pre-existing health conditions that could be affected by Imitrex medication, such as allergy, depression, diabetes, heart disease, history of heart attack, seizures, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney or liver disorder and pregnancy. Also, tell your doctor about all of the medications that you are taking. Imitrex can interact with certain antidepressant medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and cause severe side effects. Imitrex injections should not be taken within 14 days of using a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Using Imitrex within two weeks of taking an MAOI can cause dangerously high levels of Imitrex in the body. Imitrex can also interact with ergot medications and other triptans. Do not start taking any new medication before asking your pharmacist or doctor about how it may interact with Imitrex.
