What should I know about dihydroergotamine mesylate spray?

Before using dihydroergotamine mesylate spray, you should know that it is used only to treat an acute migraine attack. It should not be used to prevent a migraine headache from occurring or to treat other types of headaches, such as tension headaches. You should also know that you cannot use dihydroergotamine mesylate spray within 24 hours of using other migraine medications, including other ergot alkaloids and triptans. In addition, grapefruit products can interact with dihydroergotamine mesylate spray, so talk to your doctor before consuming grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Using this drug too frequently may result in internal organ damage. If you have a history of or current heart disease or heart attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Raynaud's disease, a bowel condition, diabetes, sepsis, any circulation disorder or kidney, lung or liver disease, you may not be able to take this medication.

Do not smoke while taking this drug and tell your doctor if you become pregnant, as this drug can cause birth defects. This drug may put you at higher risk for heart disease if you are over 40 years of age. Many drugs interact with dihydroergotamine mesylate spray, so tell your doctor about all of the medications or supplements you are taking.
