What should I know about Zomig (zolmitriptan) before taking it?

People with certain heart problems, such as chest pain (angina), heart irregularities, a history of heart attack, or uncontrolled high blood pressure, should not take Zomig (zolmitriptan), as this drug may trigger life-threatening heart problems in people with these conditions. If you have taken a drug similar to Zomig or an ergotamine-based migraine medication, you should not take Zomig for at least 24 hours. In addition, do not take Zomig for at least two weeks after taking an MAO inhibitor. Zomig ZMT, the orally disintegrating tablets, contains phenylalanine, so people who cannot ingest this substance should not take it. People who take ergotamine-type medications, MAO inhibitors, or sumatriptan should not take Zomig. Other medications that may alter the effects of Zomig are acetaminophen, cimetidine, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, oral contraceptives, sertraline, paroxetine, and propranol. Let your doctor know if you are taking these or any other medications.

Although rare, Zomig has been known to cause severe intestinal problems. If you experience symptoms such as stomach pain or bloody diarrhea, tell your doctor right away. People with liver or kidney disease, a history of seizures, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also talk to their doctor before taking Zomig.

If you experience any vision problems while taking Zomig, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
