When should I call my doctor if I am taking Atacand?

If you're taking the blood pressure medication Atacand (candesartan), call your doctor if any of the following occur:
  • Atacand isn't adequately controlling your blood pressure. Because people don't usually experience symptoms with high blood pressure, you should have your pressure checked regularly. Let your doctor know if the numbers are outside the range he or she has determined are right for you.
  • You become pregnant. Atacand can seriously harm and even kill a developing fetus. Stop taking Atacand immediately and let your doctor know that you're pregnant.
  • You experience an allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical help if you develop swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs; hoarseness; or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
  • You feel very dizzy or you faint. Lightheadedness is not uncommon at first when taking Atacand. (You may be able to minimize this problem if you get up slowly after lying down for a while. Try resting your feet on the floor for a few minutes before standing.) However, you should let your doctor know if your dizziness is severe or if you faint.
  • You have surgery planned. Atacand can cause low blood pressure during major surgery or when you're given anesthesia. Make sure the medical personnel involved with the procedure know ahead of time that you take Atacand.
  • You're considering starting another medication. Many drugs, including over-the-counter ones, may interact with Atacand or otherwise affect your blood pressure, so talk with your doctor before taking any new drugs or herbal remedies.
