What should I know about Benicar before taking it?

Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil) is for the treatment of high blood pressure. If you have had any allergic reactions to olmesartan medoxomil or other ingredients in Benicar, you should not take Benicar. Benicar should not be taken if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant; there could be serious injury to the baby. You should not breastfeed while taking Benicar. There are some FDA studies that have shown that there are more cases of death from heart issues and strokes in people who have type 2 diabetes who are taking Benicar, but your doctor may determine that the positive outcomes from treatment with Benicar may be stronger than the potential risks. Some people have developed severe, chronic diarrhea months to years after starting olmesartan. Tell your doctor if you have this problem while taking Benicar.

Additionally, anyone who has a history of congestive heart failure or liver or kidney disease may need a lower dose of Benicar. If you have experienced any swelling in the face, lips, throat, or your extremities, you should talk to your doctor about that prior to starting Benicar. Some medications may need dose adjustments when taking Benicar, especially diuretics. Benicar needs to be taken consistently and you will need to have your blood pressure checked regularly while taking the drug. Don't stop taking Benicar just because you feel fine. High blood pressure may not have any obvious symptoms.
