What should seniors know before using Atacand HCT?

Before using Atacand HCT (candesartan and hydrochlorothiazide), seniors should know that this blood pressure drug is generally safe for older adults to use as a treatment for high blood pressure. However, because this drug is excreted by the kidneys, seniors with kidney problems may be at greater risk for side effects. In addition, Atacand HCT contains a kind of drug called a thiazide diuretic, and elderly people taking this kind of drug may be more prone to falling and to orthostatic hypotension, a medical condition in which a person's blood pressure suddenly drops when he or she stands up.
