Can Micardis HCT interact with other medications?

Micardis HCT (telmisartan and hydrochlorothiazide), a drug prescribed to treat high blood pressure, can interact with a number of other medications and some supplements, potentially raising your risk for side effects or other problems. Before taking Micardis HCT, give your doctor and pharmacist a list of all your other medicines (prescription and nonprescription), as well as any dietary and herbal supplements that you take. Once you begin treatment with Micardis HCT, check with your doctor and pharmacist before taking any new drug or supplement. Be especially careful to mention if you take:
  • potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium
  • heart medicines, including digoxin and ramipril
  • other blood pressure medicines
  • blood thinners such as warfarin
  • other diuretic medications
  • steroid medications, including ACTH (also called adrenocorticotropic hormone)
  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, including aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen
  • drugs to treat diabetes, including insulin and oral medications
  • lithium (often prescribed to treat bipolar disorder)
  • the cholesterol-lowering drugs cholestyramine and colestipol
  • muscle relaxants
  • arthritis medications
  • drugs that make you sleepy, including cold and allergy medications, sleeping pills, sedatives and narcotic painkillers
If you drink alcohol (or use any drug recreationally), tell your doctor before taking Micardis HCT. Alcohol may worsen the side effects of Micardis HCT. If you're planning to have surgery, including dental surgery, tell your surgeon that you are taking Micardis HCT.
