Are there any risks in taking Benicar?

The biggest risks associated with Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil) could be in pregnant women and people with type 2 diabetes. Benicar is shown to harm fetuses at different stages of pregnancy.  The FDA is currently reviewing preliminary data which may put patients who are taking Benicar and also have type 2 diabetes at a higher risk for death from cardiovascular cause.  However, the FDA have stated that the benefits of Benicar in treating high blood pressure outweigh the potential risks at this time. There is a risk of allergic reaction and some side effects as well. Some people have developed severe, chronic diarrhea months to years after starting olmesartan. Tell your doctor if you have this problem while taking Benicar.
