How can I minimize the side effects of Benicar HCT?

To minimize side effects of the blood pressure medication Benicar HCT (olmesartan and hydrochlorothiazide), take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than directed. To avoid feeling lightheaded or faint, don't allow yourself to become dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluid, especially if you've been sweating a lot or have experienced diarrhea or vomiting. Also, to help with dizziness, rise slowly if you've been lying down for a while. Try resting your feet on the floor for a few minutes before standing.

Benicar HCT can make your skin extra-sensitive to sunlight. Protect yourself by using cover-ups, sunglasses and sunblock.

Certain medicines and supplements can interact with Benicar HCT. To minimize side effects, tell your doctor about any medicines you take (prescription and nonprescription), as well as herbal or dietary supplements. Do not start any new ones without talking to your doctor first. Give your doctor a complete medical history as well, because certain medical conditions may increase your risk for side effects.

Do not take Benicar HCT if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant. The drug may cause serious harm, even death, to a developing fetus, especially if you take it during the second or third trimester. If you discover that you're pregnant while on Benicar HCT, stop taking it and call your doctor right away.

Talk with your doctor about ways to treat other persistent or bothersome side effects.
