How does Micardis HCT reduce high blood pressure?

Micardis HCT (telmisartan and hydrochlorothiazide) contains two active ingredients, which lower your blood pressure in different ways. Telmisartan belongs to a category of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers, or ARBs. These drugs help blood vessels stay open by blocking the artery-constricting effects of a chemical called angiotensin. Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic (water pill), reduces blood pressure by helping your body excrete excess water and salt into urine. Often doctors prescribe one of these drugs individually to try to lower high blood pressure. If a single drug isn't enough to control your blood pressure, your doctor may switch you to Micardis HCT.
