What are the risks of taking nifedipine?

There are a number of risks associated with taking nifedipine:

The medication can cause drowsiness or lightheadedness that may make driving or other activities dangerous. Alcohol or medications that also cause drowsiness should not be taken while using nifedipine.- Pregnant or breast-feeding women should talk with their doctor about the benefits and risks of taking the medication.

Nifedipine may also pose risks to people with a history of heart problems, including heart attack, heart shock, heart disease, heart failure, and heart valve problems. In addition, if you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests:

  • kidney disease;
  • liver disease (especially cirrhosis);
  • digestive problems.

In addition, some medications may interact negatively with nifedipine:

  • Barbituates, carbamazepine, or rifampin may make nifedipine less effective.
  • The beta-blockers cimetidine, cyclosporine, fluconazole, fluoxetine, imatinib, itraconazole, ketanserin, magnesium salts, quinazonlines, quinidine, or ranitidine can cause dangerously low blood pressure and other side effects when taken with nifedipine.
  • Nifedipine can decrease the effectiveness of quinidine, theophylline, or vinca alkaloids.
  • Nifedipine can also increase the actions and side effects of beta-blockers, cyclosporine, digozin, hydantoins, ketanserin, lithium, theophylline, and vinca alkaloids.
